redbike Club Group Rides
Please Check Updates Below
Every Monday, there is a redbike mountain bike group ride meeting at Da Capo at 6:15 pm and leaving at 6:30 pm. Da Capo is the cafe located across the street from the Redbike store located at 10918-88 Ave. This is intended to be a fun trail ride for most levels of mountain biking, but you are required to have some basic cycling skills since we will be riding as much technical single track as we can find.
Please be aware that having an ABA general membership is required to join all club rides. This includes the insurance that would cover each rider in the group. We highly encourage joining the redbike club by purchasing the membership at the store. This includes the ABA membership, insurance, T-shirt, 15% off accessories/parts and guaranteed good times.
Every Wednesday night, there will be a redbike race pace ride meeting and leaving Da Capo at 6:30pm. This ride is meant for redbike raceteam members to use as a training session and for others who wish to ride at a fast and techincal level to improve their cardio and bike handling skills.
Saturdays at 11:00am there is a redbike road ride also meeting at Da Capo. This is a basic level road ride lasting up to two hours
There will be rides added and cancelled throughout the year depending on weather, group leader availability, races and other unforeseen events, so please check the updates below.
redbike Race Team
Anyone who wishes to join the redbike race team, please contact Brent or Mark at the store. It really is a fun experience and will help you improve all aspects of your cycling. I just do it for the 15% off discount for team members.
UPDATES
December 12, 2011
I am in the midst of finishing the paperwork to apply for club affliliation with the ABA for the upcoming 2012 ride and race season. So by the beginning of next week, everyone should be able to sign up for their club membership or their race license. The ABA strongly recommends that all members sign online for membership this year due to the new computer processing. The club membership and privileges will have to be renewed for the new year starting January 1, 2012. The cost is still $99 which includes ABA insurance, 15% off parts and accessories and a redbike T-shirt. This year, we are giving club members the opportunity to pay $150 for club fees, but instead of a T-shirt, they can get one of those swanky redbike race jerseys. We are also looking at getting a redbike club card to show to whomever at the shoppe that you get the 15% off. There has been a few moments of miscommunication this past year which we wish to avoid.
December 11, 2011
Wow, If we didn't get that freak snowstorm a month ago, we would still be trail riding. Instead, we have super bumpy icy trails to ride, which I suppose is better that sitting at home watching True Blood, which I am still trying to understand but it's just not sinking in. Anyways, I would like to corral the troops and let everyone know that there is still a weekly ride Sundays at Noon meeting at Da Capo. The trail conditions are so-so but the weather is amazingly warm. We all know that it will eventually snow and the sweet packed snow will make our rides fun again.
September 23, 2011
Due to cross racing, there will be no saturday road ride. Come check out the races instead.
September 19, 2011
Wow, What a month. No real updates because all rides have been a full go, but we have some reminders for everyone. Monday trail rides are going strong, but please bring lights since the sun goes down by 8:00. The trails are absolutely perfect right now so please keep riding till the snow flies. Wednesday racepace rides are now cyclocross training, but if people wish to drop by with their mountain bikes to hit the trail with other mountain bikers, please do so. Also, we would like to remind people who have cyclocross bikes that the Tuesday night cross races at Goldbar and Capilano park have started already. Registration starts at 6:30 and the race starts at 7:00.
August 26, 2011
Well, it's been a long time since the last update, but it's been because the weather and trail conditions have been perfect. This update is to let people know that the Saturday road ride is cancelled since I will be in HInton racing the provincials. But, it will be back to usual the weekend after that. Just a reminder that the Monday trail rides are alive and kicking. The sun goes down a bit earlier so bring some clear glasses. Wednesday night rides starting August 31 will be cyclocross training night, but people still wish to meet up with others who wish to continue mountain biking, they are welcome. And, of course, we will all have pizza and beer afterwards.
July 29, 2011
I am off to Panorama this weekend for some downhill riding so unfortunately the Saturday road ride is cancelled. Also, since Monday is a holiday, we are looking at a late morning trail ride. Keep checking the update.
July 28, 2011
The trails are still a bit slick but very ridable. We encourage everyone to head out this weekend for a ride. Looks like we are in for a respite from the rain for the next week or two so lets take advantage. There are a couple of XC races left in the season and the provincial road championships are coming up so there are plenty of reasons to keep the heartrate up.
July 22, 2011
Wow, we can't seem to get a break from this rain. It looks like rain is again going to force us to cancel the Saturday road ride. Keep up with the updates for future
July 11, 2011
Well, it kinds stopped raining today, but we are still going to cancel the Monday night ride due to overall trail conditions. There has been so much rain the past week that if we rode the trails, we would be damaging it further. Sorry kids.
July 8, 2011
The Saturday road ride has been cancelled due to rain and possibility of thundershowers. There is also strong wind with cold temperatures predicted. The lookout for the Monday night ride is looking bleak as well. Stayed tuned.
July 8, 2011
The Perogy XC mountain bike race this Sunday has been officially postponed to August 21 due to amazingly poor conditions.
July 8, 2011
We have been very lucky with the weather the past couple of weeks so all rides were a go. There was a lot of good times on the trails with perfect conditions for the exception of the mosquitoes. Seriously, swarmed does not even begin to describe the feeling of being attacked by those nasty critters. Anyways, the weather has turned on us and it has been raining quite a bit lately. So please keep checking the updates to check on ride statuses.
June 19, 2011
Happy Father's day. It seems that the weather gods and hockey gods got together and decided that the rest of Canada must must suffer Vancouver's rainy weather. So, due to the moronic actions of the rioters, we have had a non-stop rain for the last few days. We tried to go for a trail ride today but quickly realized that the lower gravel trails are totally flooded, to the point where you can actually swimming along it. Needless to say that the single track is very muddy and not welcomingly ridable. So, we are going to take this Monday off so that the trails can properly dry out. Stay tuned for the next ride date ya all.
June 17, 2011
Hey kids, it doesn't look good. Rain is forecasted for Saturday morning so the 11:00am ride will be cancelled. I will show up with my cross bike so see who shows up. I encourage people to do the same as cross riding in the rain is kinda fun, but road riding in the rain is not. Here's hoping for some dry sunny weather in the future.
June 17, 2011
Tornadoes???Really??? The weather is not cooperative right now so it is very difficult to predict whether it is going to rain or not. Please check the updates for club ride statuses. As this moment, the Saturday road ride is a go, but the forecast says it is suppose to rain all day so who knows. For those of you who has a cross bike, we may turn the ride to a rainy cross ride.
June 15, 2011
We really got lucky on monday. Not a single drop of rain fell during the monday night ride, but it has been raining pretty consistently since then. With rain expected today, we are cancelling the Wednesday night ride due to poor trail conditions and strong possibility of rain.
June 13, 2011
Keep your fingers crossed. If the weather holds, the trail ride should be amazing tonight. We have to hit the trails before the impending rain storm hits us for the rest of the week. Maybe bring a light rain jacket tonight just in case.
June 5, 2011
The weather looks great for the Monday night ride so come on out for a long ride as we head for the summer solstice. We are also thinking about making the redbike mascot the honey badger. Let us know what you think of that idea.
June 5, 2011
It is amazing how a little rain just makes things perfect. We left at 1:30pm for a 3-4 hour ride with the skies looking very ominous, but we had sunny skies piercing through the clouds most of the day. The recent rain packed down the trails well with a few mud puddles along the way making today's ride one of the season's best. We do invite anyone to the Sunday marathon race pace rides, just be ready for a 3-5 hour ride.
June 3, 2011
Due to the rain and possible snow overnight and Saturday, the June 4 road ride has been cancelled. I will be in Canmore racing so unless we have a replacement group leader, the June 11 group ride will be postponed. Sorry about that kids.
June 1, 2011
Race Results Update
Due to the cancellation of the Summer Solstice XC due to rain??????, the next race was the Giver-8-er marathon race. Shantel went two for two this year with a win in the women solo division, and Chris placed tenth in a very stacked field of 64 racers.
June 1, 2011
Race Results Update
It is the start of the race season, so we will be updating results throughout the year. The first mountain bike race was the Grab Your Granny Gear race brought by Hardcore and redbike. It was a fantastic start to the season as we had four podium finishes with three wins. Shantel won women's Elite, Colter won men's Expert and Hans won men's Sport division. Blaine placed second in men's Novice. The rest of the team including Sam, David, Whaleed, Paul W., Noah, Chris, Jean, Brad and myself raced well and brought home some ABA points. Andrew had an unfortunate accident and did not finished the race, but it will not deter him from entering more in the future.
May 30, 2011
Monday never felt better. The trails are better than ever so everyone try to head out today for a fun and gun group ride at Da Capo at 6:30. A reminder, those club members who have not received their T-shirts, come by the shoppe and get them while supplies last. See you tonight.
May 25, 2011
Hey kids. Wednesday night ride tonight is going to be a bit like our favorite bike at the shop, a hybrid night. Due to the cancellation of the monday night ride, we are inviting everyone to tonight's ride. If one group wishes to go race pace, they can, but a second group is moving at trail pace. So, everyone should head out tonight at 6:30 because the trail conditions are at it's best.
May 23, 2011
There is a possibility of rain today, all day. So we decided that we are going to take today off from the group ride. If the weather holds, we do encourage people to head out. Wednesday night ride is a go so please come out for a fast ride if you are up for it.
May 22, 2011
After a slight debate, we decided that the Monday night ride is still going to be at the regular time tomorrow May 23, 2011 at 6:30. We are going to stay consistent with this during anytime a stat holiday falls on a Monday. Sorry for the late notice. We just finished racing the Hardcore/Redbike TT, Crit and XC race and it was a blast. Sunny and hot one moment, then pouring rain the next. Classic Alberta weather conditions.
May 18, 2011
Wednesday night racepace group ride is on for tonight. For those of you who wishes to ride with a faster, continuous pace, show up at Da Capo tonight at 6:30pm.
May 13, 2011
Just a reminder that May 14 Saturday road ride is meeting at 11:00 am for a two hour ride.
The weather is just cooperating so well that we are going for a trail ride this Sunday meeting at Da Capo at 1:30pm. Suppose to be sunny and warm so bring your bike, gear and your legs for this one. Remember, Monday rides are a full go and the turn out has been great. So get your redbike club membership and join the fun.
May 9, 2011
Monday night group ride is on like Donkey Kong. I really have no idea what that means, but I love using any 80's reference at any chance. 6:30pm at Da Capo, and please have your redbike club membership and ABA insurance sorted out.
May 5, 2011
Hello all. We are good to go for this Saturday May 7, 2011 road ride at 11:00am. Looks like it may rain at various points during the day so bring a light rain jacket if you like. See you at Da Capo.
April 26, 2011
We are planning on having our first official Monday night club ride on May 2, 2011 at 6:30 meeting at Da Capo. So make sure you have been by the store to join the redbike club to get the ABA insurance and your sweet T shirt.
April 25, 2011
Wow. What a way to start the season. It was a blistering 15 degrees on the plus side this Sunday so we went out for a reconnaissance mission to see how ridable the trails are. Some good news and bad. We were able to go for a fast 3 hour ride mixing up the available dry trails with pavement and mud. It was a blast as Bruce, Matt, Paul, Sam, Kurt, Taylor, Lukaz, Mark B, Shantal and I were just happy to get on a mountain bike and grind through the dirt.
April 22, 2011
Hey guess what? It's sort of summerish. We are having our first redbike road ride of the year Saturday April 23, 2011 at 11:00 am meeting at Da Capo. Hopefully having enough time to get a coffee, then heading off at 11:15. This is meant for a casual road ride lasting two hours max., so if you are looking for hard hill intervals, take your Powermeter and heartrate monitor somewhere else. As always, bring water, tube, levers, pump and food.
April 14, 2011
With winter giving us its last effort (fingers crossed) no rides are yet scheduled. Although there has been some unofficial tempo road rides while the sun shines, and with some luck from the weather gods 2 new road rides will be added to the redbike ride schedule. Keep posted here for updates on those, and of course the mountainbike ride info here as well....go sun go!
December 6, 2010
Hello everyone. Sorry for the delay in updates, but everyone is all about that crazy trend called Facebook. I personally don't think it will last. Anyways, we have been a part of a interclub winter ride every Sunday and it's been a blast. We all meet at Da Capo at noon, warm up, have coffee, then leave at 12:30 for the ride. I will not misguide anyone and say that is a casual ride because it is anything but. It runs for 2-3 hours and it is at a brisk pace, so anyone who does not have the lungs for it will be dropped. Don't fret, Bruce and I are still planning on getting the Monday night winter rides going. Hopefully we will get another warm period and so we can ride at night again. Stay tuned.
November 8, 2010
It will be dark by 5:00 so if people are meeting up for a ride tonight at 6:30, then bring your lights. My right knee is really stiff from yesterday's ride so I may not make it out, but I really encourage people to hit the trails. What a great autumn we had for cyclocross and trail riding. redbike has Lupine lights that will make the trails shine so come by the store and ask about them.
November 7, 2010
Sunday ride meeting at Da Capo at noon for a longish ride to the new trail near the Anthony Henday bridge. Don't forget about the daylight saving time change people.
October 31, 2010
The weather is holding like my grandmother's dentures; it's sticking on, but can give out any second, and when it does, its going to be ugly. So, let's get out there kids and do some night riding. Da Capo at 6:30 pm November 1, lights are pretty much mandatory at this point. Suppose to be super nice out and the trails are smooth and fast. As a side note, Sam, Sheldon, Jason, Gord and I headed out Saturday to ride the new trail past the Anthony Henday bridge south of Terwillegar. Really fun, techy trail with tight switchbacks and short steep climbs. Just another new trail to add to the E ville system.

redbike raceteam still first in team standings for cyclocross
Wow, what an eventful weekend of racing. Where to start? Well, the Provincial Cyclocross Championships were held on Saturday in Devon and our team was represented by myself, Bruce, Matt, Shantel, Noah, Jean, Derek, Paul and Isaac. Paul Wyminga started the day for our team by placing 13th in the Sport division. Almost top ten buddy. Shanny place fourth in Elite women which in most circumstances would be a fantastic placing, but she had mechanical problems that plagued her during the race. We are still super proud of her and her unknown muscle in her legs. Derek and I raced in the stacked Master A group and placed in a very respectable 9th and 10th place where I barely outsprinted him and Chris Hubick of United Cycle. Apparently, it was the most exciting moment of the entire race day. I just had fun racing with two friends. Noah fought hard and placed 20th in Master A. Bruce was in true racing form as he finished fifth in an equally stacked Master B group. Jean bravely raced in Master B despite a very strained low back and finished 17th. Who says Quebecers are wimps? Isaac Penner was the other medal winner of the day as he finished third in U17, and lastly Matthew Krahn raced to third in Elite Men meaning he will be going to Nationals in November representing Alberta. Special thanks to Cory and Stu at United Cycle for putting up one of my favourite courses this year.
Sunday was the PedalHead SuperPrestige. Well, it was a day of contrasting efforts for our team. Shanny got her mechanical fixed up and went all crazy on the Ellite women to finish first. All this in front of her mom, who was sure proud and finally understood why Shanny always liked to wear helmets all day when she was in kindergarten. Derek raced like a madman, well, more werewolf, in the Expert race and placed sixth despite starting at the back. The reason for this was that someone, who shall remain nameless, chopped Bruce very early in the first lap where he fell and damaged his bike. Derek was forced off course and was passed by the entire field. He, who will remain nameless, hopefully will make amends to Bruce for his sakes because he is actually a friend of ours and redbike. Matt also had a tough race with a fall and mechanicals to finish eighth. I had a very troubled race as I chopped a racer in a turn and we both almost crashed, then actually crashed later, which bent my derailleur hanger and jammed my rear brakes. I then had to race the rest of the way with a miss-firing derailleur which culmulated with me falling into the pond. But I still ended finishing the race and placed 15th with a big smile on my face. In the Sport race, Darcy, Noah and Paul did the team proud by placing 13th, 28th and 32nd in a very packed and competitive field.
October 19, 2010
Well, there was only one cyclocross race this past weekend, The Remington Development's Cross for Kids. I didn't race because I thought the name was just too long. Anyways, Shantel, Matt and Ryan headed down to Calgary, well not really Ryan cause he lives there, and all did very well. Shantel won the Women's Elite race in dominate fashion, Matt placed fourth and Ryan placed eighth in Men's Elite. This was a great showing for all three considering they race in the super competitive Elite division. The results still place the Redbike race team first in team standings for cyclocross. Whoo hoo.
October 17, 2010
Quoting from my favorite 80's tv show The A team, "I love it when a plan comes together". I really wanted to get some group rides out there this weekend because the trail conditions were absolutely perfect. Fall mountain biking is always so fun because we know that the impending doom of winter can arrive any moment and usually things are dry and fast. Well, we were able to head out for a rip Friday, Saturday and Sunday with sunny skies and crisp air. We are going to continue that fun with some night riding Monday at 6:30pm so bring your lights.
October 12, 2010
Wednesday night cyclocross ride/training is again meeting at Kinsmen field at 6:30 pm for some riding and drills. See everyone there and bring lights.
October 12, 2010
Another cyclocross race weekend and more mid-twenties sunny days? What!? Well, that is what happened this past weekend with the GP Jim Horner and more importantly, the redbike RedCross race. The redbike race team had another strong showing at both races despite the fact that Matt Krahn was sick and could not race at all. The GP Jim Horner showed why Shantal is not only one of the fastest cyclists in the province but also one of the most consistant with another third place showing in the women's Elite race. Ryan Hopping fought hard in the super competitive men's Elite division while Derrick Chipping had a very strong showing in the Expert division after being upgraded from the Sport division. Bruce Penner and Jean also raced hard in men's Expert. My races are having a strong sense of deja vu since I had another race where I hovered between second and seventh and ended up finishing fifth. In a particularly sweet performance was Darcy Visscher who raced for the first time in ten years since he was busy getting his PhD, raising two daughters and looking good in his Chrome knickers. He fought some nervousness and raced to a near top ten placing in men's Sport which was 40+ people deep.
Well, I'm sounding a bit biased, but the redbike RedCross race was the best race ever. The jumpy castle was a hit with the kids and hipsters alike. It was a beautiful day, and the race course, which was reversed from Saturday with some changes, was super fun and fast. Shantal placed second, but more importantly, she won a jar of Baconaisse by being the leader after the first lap. Ryan Hopping placed sixth in men's Elite and I, of course, placed fifth after being somewhere from third to seventh. Darcy, Noah Walt, Issac Penner and Paul Wyminga raced in men's Sport placing 15th, 22nd, 23th, and 38th respectively. As a note, this was Issac and Paul's first race in the Sport division and both did amazing. Jean and Derrick raced in men's Expert placing 17th and 19th. Thanks to all the redbike volunteers who helped out for the race.
October 6, 2010
Tonight is cyclocross training night so we are now meeting at the HUSKY FIELD at KINSMEN to do some drills at 6:30pm. More importantly, the redbike RedCross race is this Sunday so please register and race or help us and volunteer. Contact me, Mark, at 780 619 9631 so I can put you to work.
October 4, 2010
Well, it rained enough for the ride tonight to be cancelled. Stupid rain, and always on Mondays for some reason. This Wednesday is looking good so bring your cyclocross bike out or bring your mountain bike and meet us at Da Capo at 6:30pm.
October 3, 2010
Second weekend of cyclocross racing consisted of the Dark Knight and the Oval Cross. Bruce, Shantel and I went for a fun night ride at the COP which consisted of a sweet dirt jump section, and yes, as Bruce proved, you can clear table tops with a cyclocross. Bruce and Shanny went for a casual ride while I was silly enough to crank hard to catch up to the lead pack after a inauspicious start. I forgot that I would have to race again in 12 hours. Oops.
Well, the race that mattered, The Oval Cross, was a fun and twisty course with a killer long sandpit. The team once again did very well with three podiums and loads of ABA points. Derrick Chipping and his beard cleared the Men's Sport race with a fierce start and finished strong with third. Shantal showed the sandpit who's boss and finished in third as well. Matt Krahn, with his entire family watching, finished in a solid second in Men's Elite. Bruce Penner, in an inspirational race, finished seventh in a super competitive Expert field. Ryan Hopping rode an audacious race despite a crash in Men's Elite. As for me, my legs felt like lead, I crashed and cut my leg bad enough to seek medical attention, fell again in the sandpit, thought I was going to puke a dozen times and somehow I ended up in sixth. Must of been the picture of Cliff I have on my stem. But, I was pretty happy, just like everyone else on the team.
September 29, 2010
We all should take advantage of the sunny autumn weather and go for a ride tonight. Those of you who wishes to go mountain biking tonight, Kurt and Paul are going to meet up at Da Capo tonight at 6:30. We are still having cyclocross training night also meeting at Da Capo at 6:30 then maybe heading over to Kinsmen for some fun skill drills.
September 26, 2010
Well, it looks like our fall feels like summer, our summer felt like spring, our spring felt like winter and our winter......felt like winter. But what can I say. It's so on for Monday night riding tomorrow night because it's going to be warm and dry, but do bring lights with you because it is getting dark by 7:30. See everyone tomorrow at Da Capo at 6:30, and do not be late because we do want to leave as soon as we can.
September 26, 2010
Well, this weekend was the start of the official ABA cyclocross season with the School of Cross on Saturday and Hop N Hurl on Sunday. It was 26 degrees and sunny Saturday so it was a bizarre beginning to the season, but a great start for the Redbike race team. Matt Krahn placed first in Men's Elite by a large margin in a very competitive and tough field. Shantal Koenig came in fourth in Women's Elite like the star she is. I came in third and Chris Ring came in seventh in Men's Sport. Ryan Hopping, Jean Valiquette and Noah Walt raced hard in Men's Elite, Expert and Sport respectively.
They should call the Hop N Hurl, the Hurl N Hurl N Hurl, because racing two days in a row is ridiculous. Matt Krahn had mechanical difficulties and could not finished the race, but I think it was the champagne we drank the day before that caused some problems. Just kidding. It just really sucks to race twice in a row. Shantal wouldn't initially tell me how she did with her buddhist like modesty, but I found out that she placed fifth. In a very tight Men's Sport race, I placed fourth after bouncing from first to seventh, and Derrick Chipping, who had a very busy summer and has not been able to race much this season, rocked in his return by placing sixth. That man is just scary and sexy at the same time on a bike. Finally, our team manager, Bruce Penner, represented by racing his disc braked Everti in Men's Expert as did Jean.
Shout out to Alexis, who can wield a cowbell better than Will Ferrell, Andie, Shauna, Judy, and everyone who cheered for us.
Overall, the team did fantastic and the races were very fun to watch with a lot of people to cheer for. Yeah, that means you Colter.
September 24, 2010
I know it is suppose to be absolutely beautiful tomorrow, but the Saturday 11:00am morning road ride is cancelled since we are all racing the School of Cross. I do encourage everyone to go for a spin since it maybe one of the last real nice sunny days we have left.
September 21, 2010
While Brent, Bruce and Derrick are in Vegas enjoying the sun and riding 2011 bikes for free, the rest of us bundled up and went cyclocross racing tonight. The weather was actually perfect again with no rain and calm wind. Our Elite racer Matt Krahn survived an early pileup to speed ahead and finish first. The course was fun and twisty so there were loads of crashes and pileups. Apparently, most of them were caused by Colter Young who himself had eight. Bloody roadies. The rest of the Redbike team was represented by myself, Shantal, Noah Walt and Sam Mothana. I came in 7th in group B, which I was happy with considering I didn't have a chance to take a practice lap. Shantal probably kicked butt as usual. That girl is as consistent as Colter's bowels. Noah rocked the race with a single speed, and Sam raced his first cyclocross race ever tonight. A big shout out to Cory, Mike and Stu at United Cycle for putting up another great Tuesday night race. We are heading out tomorrow at 6:30 to do more cyclocross skill drills meeting at Da Capo or at Emily Murphy park.
September 20, 2010
Take your pick; the rain, cold, leaves or the fact that the new season of 90210 just started. The monday night ride tonight is cancelled. Don't fret because we are still going to ride as long as we can or until it's just me showing up for the ride. Remember that when it stops raining, layer up and bring lights because it gets dark pretty early.
September 19, 2010
I just love beating the rain. It was an almost full Redbike cyclocross turnout. Myself, Bruce, Bruce's son Isaac, Matt, Shanny, Kurt, Derek, Darcy, Brent, Jean aka "the french crack" and Antonio went out for a fun and fast cross ride to Goldbar park and did some laps. The weather was brisk but perfect when you start riding in those sweet Redbike arm and leg warmers. We got back to Da Capo for food and coffee without a drop of rain, but unfortunately, it has been raining late in the afternoon, so Monday will be tentative. Please check later for an update.
September 18, 2010
There will be a cyclocross ride tomorrow, the 19th, at 11:00am. It looks like its going to rain or maybe snow so get out those Edmonton Eskimo toques and layer up. We are looking at actually getting in a solid ride, as on Wednesdays, we have been doing skill drills where I consistantly fell on my face as I failed to clip into my pedals during practice starts. I also had a hard time with the waterbottle relay. Curse my short asian arms. Shanny also had problems, but she sure looked cute falling over. Good thing she kicked everyones butt during the team sprint relays.
September 15, 2010
Wednesday night cyclocross ride is on for tonight meeting at Da Capo at 6:30. Bring your cyclocross or your mountain bike, but those with mountain bikes will have to try to keep up. We will try not to drop people, but it is only fair for those training for cyclocross season that we keep the pace up.
September 14, 2010
Cyclocross season is rocking and rolling with the start of the Tuesday night cyclocross racing series. What a turn out. There were 74 people last week and tonight it seemed there were about 100. Redbike was represented by Matt Krahn in the Elite division placing forth for the second time in a row. I was able to muscle my way to a sixth place finish in the Expert division. Our "kindof" Elite men's racer, Colter Young, was in third place until that chili burrito he ate before the race came knocking on his gastrointestinal tract. The rest of the Redbike team consisted of Noah Walt and Paul Wyminga who fought hard in the very crowded Expert division. Ideal weather and a fun course made for a very good start to the painful cyclocross season.
September 13, 2010
For the 4 of you who actually read this blog, excluding my mom, this is going to sound like a broken record, but the trails are wet and muddy. So, we are going for a ride today but staying on the double track and checking out the single track. I encourage anyone who has a cyclocross to bring them out as I will be bringing mine see you tonight at 630 at Da Capo

Now that everyone has their Redbike gear to show off, it is time that we go for more rides. We are starting a late season road ride on Saturdays at 11:00am meeting at Da Capo. The inaugural ride was actually last Saturday which was attended by myself, Richard Larson, Dick Foose and Paavo, who is now at the single name status. It is meant to be a fun, casual ride to help people enjoy road riding and to learn some courses in and around the city. Please come on out until the snow flies.

Christmas came really early this year because our Sugoi Redbike team gear is already in. We have new long sleeve race fabric jerseys, women's design short sleeve race jerseys, half zip black and red team short sleeve jerseys, Redbike leg and arm warmers and finally, Redbike team bib shorts. We also have in more redbike wind/water resistant jackets just in time for the fall chill. Well....they all just look really sweet.

Cold and rainy today? Must be cyclocross season. Whether or not you plan to race this year, a cyclocross is a fantastic bike to ride during the wet, cold, dark days of autumn, or any time of the year. So add another bike to the quiver and come join us for Tuesday night races or Wednesday night cyclocross rides. If interested, call Bruce or Mark at Redbike for more info. Four of us went out in the rain and did laps around Emily Murphy park which is the site for our Redbike RedCross race on October.
September 7, 2010
Hope everyone was able to go for a ride yesterday, as the weather and the trails were perfect. Some of us went for a ride through Whitemud to check out a new trail Bruce, Rob and Lance has been working on to bypass the slumping stairs drop. Our man Jean decided to bring his cyclocross to challenge the Whitemud trails, and well, the trails won this round. Let's just say Jean's face wanted to say hi to a rock, and ended up with a six hour visit to the emergency room. It is suppose to rain today so no organized ride but some people are heading out for a cross ride at 1:00.
August 30, 2010
All the fingers being crossed did not keep the rain away. We have to change the Monday night mountain trail ride to a cyclocross rip. So if you want to come out and ride your cyclocross or mountain bike on some wet double track please meet up with us tonight at Da Capo 6:30. Also, Wednesday night is going to be cyclocross race training starting next week September 8, so those of you who have a cyclocross, bring them out. 6:30 at Da Capo this Wednesday for a fast mountain bike ride as usual.
August 30, 2010
I'm no meteorologist or psychologist, but cold and rain can be depressing to the mountain biker; unless you are planning on buying some sweet Redbike arm and leg warmers which are expected to be in soon. Even though XC race season is over, the Monday night ride is still going strong. Lights, balaclavas, booties and layering may soon be a factor, but we are going to continue well into November and whenever we can over the winter. Tonight's ride is going to depend on how much it rains during the day and if there are thundershowers during the evening. Keep your fingers crossed since the trails are in great shape with Bruce and Rob doing trail maintenance.

Well, with the conclusion of the Alberta mountain bike cross country championships this past weekend in Hinton, mountain biking season is officially over. The Redbike XC race team was well represented and ended the season with many podium results. Matthew Krahn placed second in Elite men under 23 and fifth place overall. As a side note, Matthew is the 2010 Alberta Cat III road champion. Shantal Koenig placed second in Elite women, and is now the 2010 Alberta XC Cup champion. Jean Valiquette raced to second in Men's Master Expert, then decided to hike 20km in Mt. Robson. Chris "the fighting chicken" Ring placed first in Men's Novice with a dominate performance, and yours truly, Mark "El Diablo" Jung placed second. With a freakish performance by our young Mr. Colter Young in his first mountain bike XC race, he placed third in Men's Sport with possibly the most adventurous individual ride in cycling history. It was a full podium day at the Provincial Championships by the Redbike race team.
August 23, 2010
What month is it again? Get your knickers on kids cause it's nippy outside and it feels like October. Ride is on tonight at 630 meeting at Da Capo as usual.
August 18, 2010
For those who stuck with us during the thundershowers on Monday night, you rock. It was an eager group ready to hit some single track and the new trail near McNally hill, but due to possible death by lightning, we kept hidden under the bridge like a bunch of trolls. Despite the rain, the mood was quite buoyant by all, and eventually, we rode some fast double track for an hour. I was surprised and pleased to see that despite the rain and mud, everyone still had a fun time. Wednesday night racepace night is a solid go for now.
August 11, 2010
We just avoided getting dumped on by the crazy thundershowers on Monday night. Famous last words by Chris Ring, "it's totally not going to rain, we should keep riding". Anyways, tonight should be a bit of a safer ride, with no big Indiana Jones type scattering to avoid getting hit by lightning. Da Capo tonight at 6:30 everyone.
August 9, 2010
Monday, check. Sunshine, word up. Sweet dry trails, yup. See everyone tonight at 6:30pm at Da Capo. Also, as a reminder, we have been riding Sundays at 1:00pm for a race pace, marathon 3-6 hour ride. Anyone can join the group ride to see how hard they can push themselves. Good times.
August 4, 2010
Bruce, our race team manager/trainer/taskmaster, is sick with the bubonic plague or something like that, so he will not be leading our Wednesday night ride. I may have to attend my sister's birthday party to spend time with my family so I maybe out as well. Since team members are racing the TR3 or the Devon race, we suggest that who ever shows up go for a good rip. Cheers.
August 1, 2010
For everyone who was fortunate enough to head out today for a ride, good timing. Beautiful conditions made for a great trail ride regardless of a certain Russian-Canadian's cramping. Seriously, some guy stopped in his car to make sure Ilia was not dead by the side of the road. Sweet riding brother. Monday at 1:00 is up in the air due to rain late and possibly all day tomorrow. We will see who shows up.
July 31, 2010
Hello everyone. This long weekend brings us fine weather to go trail riding so we have two rides planned. First one is Sunday August 1, 2010 at 1:00 for a longish, sort of fast ride, and Monday for the normal fun trail ride at the same time at 1:00. Of course, meeting at Da Capo. See you out.
July 26, 2010
I am happy to say that Monday night ride is going to happen tonight at Da Capo at 6:30. Yay. For those of you who raced the 24 hours of adrenaline this weekend, tonight will be a good cool down recovery ride. We have a lot of Mondays left this year so head out.
July 21, 2010
What is this strange yellow disc in the sky? Oh yeah, the sun. Yay. In 5 years of the Monday night rides, we have never had to cancel so many in a row, but it is supposed to be sunny and nice tonight so we are heading out. Everyone is welcome, and we are not expected to go at a race pace tonight because the trails are still very muddy, as evidenced by my cyclocross bike. See everyone tonight at Da Capo at 6:30pm
July 12, 2010
Update
Only the farmers are happy. Rain this morning and probably this afternoon has once again prompted us to cancel the Monday night ride. Don't fret because this rain can't last forever and we tend to ride Mondays well into October. Check out the ride and race blog so you can see how our redbike race team did this weekend in the Canada Cup race.
July 7. 2010
Update
Kinda of sunny skies? Due to the cancellation of the Monday night trail ride, we are making tonight's ride a non- racepace speed. Everyone is welcome to join us at Da Capo at 6:30 for a fun ride where we are going to check out the Canada Cup course and it's new changes.
June 20, 2010
Update
Get your chain lubed up and grab a stick of Juicy Fruit (my dad's favorite), it's going to be one of those "summer is finally here" days on Monday. Trails are sticky and dry, and expect to be out for a long ride cause it is the summer solstice. And it's going to be warm enough where we can have beers at Da Capo on the patio and don't need a jacket. Yay. See everyone at DC at 630.
June 16, 2010
Update
Here's to perfect trail conditions. Wednesday night race pace night is good to go, and we are planning on looping the Canada Cup course a couple of times to start, then heading east. Make sure you bring your glasses so you don't lose an eye. It's all fun and games until.......Yes, I'm talking to you Chantel.
See everyone at Da Capo tonight at 630.

redbike Club Group Rides

September 10, 2010
Now that everyone has their Redbike gear to show off, it is time that we go for more rides. We are starting a late season road ride on Saturdays at 11:00am meeting at Da Capo. The inaugural ride was actually last Saturday which was attended by myself, Richard Larson, Dick Foose and Paavo, who is now at the single name status. It is meant to be a fun, casual ride to help people enjoy road riding and to learn some courses in and around the city. Please come on out until the snow flies.
September 9, 2010
Christmas came really early this year because our Sugoi Redbike team gear is already in. We have new long sleeve race fabric jerseys, women's design short sleeve race jerseys, half zip black and red team short sleeve jerseys, Redbike leg and arm warmers and finally, Redbike team bib shorts. We also have in more redbike wind/water resistant jackets just in time for the fall chill. Well....they all just look really sweet.
September 8, 2010
August 29, 2010
